Everyone loves travelling. There are few things more enjoyable than taking a vacation and allowing yourself to truly be in the moment. Whether you want to explore new places or revisit a favourite holiday destination, it’s almost always guaranteed to be an amazing experience. But some forms of travel are better than others.
And there’s one form of travel that’s been often overlooked: travelling by RV (recreational vehicle). It’s one of those things people talk about doing but put it off. They say they’ll do it when they retire or can afford to take enough time off work but it never seems like the right time. But you shouldn’t wait to hit the road in a RV. And here’s what’s so great about travelling in a RV and why everyone should do it.
It’s never about the destination when you’re travelling in a RV. You’re exactly where you’re meant to be at all times. You can rest whenever you want, you can eat whenever you want and there’s a bathroom onboard so you never have to stop at dodgy petrol stations. You can stop to view the scenery at your own pace. And you can’t be late for a reservation because you’re already in your accommodation.
It’s also a comfortable drive. There’s loads of space to do your own thing. You can relax while your roadtrip partner takes the wheel and vice versa. And when you want to pull over and play a game of cards, you can. There are no restrictions.
One of the worst parts of travelling for many people is queuing at the airport or rushing to get to the airport full of fear that you may miss your flight. And then you have to sit in a cramped seat for a few hours, depending on where you’re going. Sure, they may be quicker. And if your holiday is time sensitive, this may be the ideal way for you to travel. However, if you really want to relax at your own pace, travelling by RV is something you should look into.
You don’t need to look for accommodation. You don’t need to book accommodation. And you don’t have to worry about arriving at your destination in time for your reservation. You know where you’re going to be staying as soon as you look into financing a recreational vehicle. Once you own one, you never have to worry about where you’re going to stay on holiday. You always have your accommodation sorted.
You can change plans halfway through your trip. You could be on your way through the Eastern Cape and see something amazing is happening in Grahamstown. So, you stop and spend a few days there and delay getting to your destination. You’re free to stop where and when you want. You can even change course completely without hesitating. In fact, you can set out on your vacation without a destination in mind. All you need is the GPS on your phone and an idea of whether you want to be near the coast or inland.
These days, we live according to such a strict schedule. Our lives are dictated by calendars and to-do lists. Which is why being spontaneous could be exactly what you need when you’re on holiday. You don’t want to have to worry about timing, when you have to arrive and when you have to leave.
You miss something when you travel by plane. Sure, you arrive at your destination exactly when you mean to. But you don’t get to see the country as you drive along. You won’t see the beautiful scenery along the long mountain roads. You won’t experience the odd little padstals along the way. You won’t be able to stop and go for a walk through a quaint seaside village. You see so much more of the country when you travel in a RV.
The truth is, many of us haven’t seen much of the country we live in. We hop from one destination to the next without taking note of what’s around us. South Africa is a beautiful place to live and every citizen of this breath-taking country should take the time to explore it.
So, next time you’re planning to travel across the country, consider buying or renting a RV so you can enjoy the scenery, be spontaneous and see parts of the country you’ve never seen before.
