As a proud South African citizen, Durban, which is situated in the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal along the East Coast of the country, is one of my favourite cities to visit. It offers history, innovation and an array of cultures to boot. If you are planning a trip to South Africa to discover its treasures, I can recommend basing yourself in this city as it gives access to everything that makes our country traditionally unique.
Port Natal (Durban Harbour) is said to be one of the busiest in the world. When it was established, trade in the area became popular. This encouraged the traditional residents, Voortrekkers, British Colonials and many natives to situate themselves at or near the port. As a result, a very culturally diverse and interesting city was born.
This beautiful part of the world boasts beaches of all shapes and sizes and during the summer months, the beach is where you want to be! Rent a bicycle and ride along the esplanade or hop on board for a cruise around the harbour. Along Durban's shoreline, you will find popular landmarks such as Ushaka Marine World, the Moses Mabida Stadium and Sun Coast Casino. All 3 of these locations offer entertainment that radiates the cities ethnicity.
A Durban tour should definitely include a visit to the Botanical gardens; here you can enjoy a picnic, have a light stroll or listen to a live band on the weekends. Other highlights in the area include the Port Natal Museum, colonial architecture and the famous Florida Road which offers a street full of restaurants and an enticing nightlife scene. There are many more activities and sights to see, I only mention these because they are my personal favourite.
This magical city is surrounded by the majestic Drakensberg Mountains. By driving only a few kilometres out of town, you too can enjoy this country life. These landscapes are full of beautiful wild animals, waterfalls and rivers and very importantly, peace and quiet! You have the option of going on a personal tour through certain areas and you will have the opportunity to go on drives to spot the "Big 5", visit cultural Zulu communities as well as partake in activities such as zip-Lining, river-rafting or hiking.
With Durban's subtropical climate, its dense green foliage and lively atmosphere, it is the perfect place to take a summer vacation. There are numerous varieties of accommodation to choose from. You can house yourself in a fancy hotel, a "homey" self-catering chalet or a pretty little cottage in the countryside. Your options really are limitless and there is something to cater for every need or taste.
With all of my favourite Durban adventures mentioned above, I would like to also mention that the people of this city are some of the friendliest and most interesting I have met. The community is relaxed and take the initiative to look after their neighbourhoods and fellow neighbours. Many have lovely stories to tell about the area giving you the idea that Durban is much appreciated by its locals. So when next planning to tour the world, mark the city of Durban, South Africa on your map and pop on over!
